The Vipp story begins in 1939, when Holger Nielsen designed and manufactured a foot-pedal garbage bin for his wife’s hair salon. Nielsen’s keen sense of aesthetics and quality were quickly recognized and requests for his useful Trash Bins began pouring in. Today, the company is run by his daughter, but little else has changed. Vipp still manufactures its pedal bins in Denmark and the materials are the same: stainless steel and rubber. “Good design never goes out of fashion,” said Nielsen and his Vipp Bins are no exception. Vipp Shelter In 2014 the designers at Vipp started the “Vipp Shelter” project. On June 22, 2015 we could have visited the Vipp factory in Copenhagen, heard from the designers, and taken a short trip into Sweden to see the actual Vipp Shelter.  For as little as $500,000 you can have your own weekend escape (with everything included).  This prefabricated, 592 square feet structure is designed to be placed in the natural setting of yo...

Have you ever seen something so compact, adorable, and smartly designed? Built as affordable housing for students in Lund, Sweden, this tiny cottage , which is under 12 square meters, rents for about $370 a month (2500 kronor) and comes with everything a tenant might need – a sleeping loft, kitchenette with dining area, a bathroom, and study area. Due to economical housing being so few and far between, the apartment is a hot commodity and students must compete to live here. They also must participate in things like blogging about their experience living in the space.

As if Bali’s beautiful seascape and tropical weather weren’t alluring enough, the Southeast Asian country boasts one of the most amazing examples we’ve seen of sustainable design — a six-story structure created by architect Elora Hardy and made almost entirely of bamboo. Now we’ve seen treehouses before. But Sharma Springs, as the building is called, gets extra awesome points for being completely handmade (“it was built from a scaled-down bamboo model, not from the blueprints and drawings,” Hardy explained to New York magazine ) and for housing a library and a spa (in addition to the lucky family who gets to live there). Outside? Dramatic views of volcanoes and palm trees, of course. We are blown away by all this amazing design with wood .

This wine rack is made of steel and holds up to a half case of wine. The fluid shape appears to be molded by the wine bottles themselves.

Urban Butik has some new products launching from Born in Sweden , including this coatrack that looks as though its hooks are peeling up off your wall.

These hooks can manage just about anything from your keys to coats and bags and also wrangle your mail at the same time. Or, stick a love note in the clothes pin. Or lunch money! Each Jpeg, pardon the pun, comes with powerful magnets so you can put them on your fridge to use for kids’ drawings or notes, and also hang a potholder or apron. There are tons of uses for these! Check out Barcelona's inspirational Chic & Basic Ramblas Hotel , designed last year by Barcelona-based La Grangja Design . The firm created an experience around the ’60s in Spain, matching the building’s 60’s vibe. With 97 rooms on six floors, the design is crisp and fresh, no-nonsense and comfortable. Enjoy the tour!
